🌍 Cape Town: Africa's Fascinating City

While I had no idea where Cape Town was, when to go, where to visit, we had made a lot of plans for our trip to Japan and had packed our bags, when we went to the airport at midnight, our flight was cancelled after waiting for our flight to be delayed and while we were thinking about what to do, we had made so many preparations, we thought let's see where the flights were, both visa-free and to discover a different culture, but when we saw that the flight to Cape Town was close and there was room on the plane, we said let's do something crazy and go to Africa and set off. That was how our trip to Cape Town started and every time I think about it, I say I'm glad we went and it became a destination I want to go to again if I have the chance.
Located in the southwest corner of South Africa, Cape Town is a fascinating city not only with its unique natural beauty but also with its historical and cultural riches. This city is a paradise for both adventure seekers and those who want a peaceful holiday. In addition to many places to visit, you can find many adrenaline-filled activities such as shark cage diving, surfing, helicopter tours, hiking, and paragliding.
Cape Town is one of the three capitals of South Africa. The parliament is located here, meaning the legislative capital of the country. It is also the capital of the Western Cape province and is called the “Mother City” because the first urbanization in South Africa began here. We are talking about a city that the New York Times ranked first on its 2014 list of “Must-see places in the world”!
Rising right in the middle of Cape Town, Table Mountain is like the heart of the city. If Table Mountain isn't enough, Bo-Kaap, right near the city center, awaits you. As you walk among the colorful houses, you always want to take an Instagram photo!
As you explore Cape Town, you come across a different story around every corner. Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela spent his years, the colourful houses of Bo-Kaap, the endless views of Cape Point and the magnificent Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden... Nature, history and culture are intertwined here, inseparable from each other.
Cape Town is a city full of surprises at every step, a city that envelops you with its energy, a city that you will never forget once you visit.
Pack your bags for Africa, Cape Town is waiting for you! 🎒🌍
TRAVEL GUIDE: CAPE TOWN

Cape Town Travel Guide: General Information

Let's take a look back in time, shall we? (It's short, I promise it won't be a boring history lesson! 😄)
Cape Town was discovered by Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias in 1488. It then changed hands between the Boers and the British. The city came to life when the first European settlement was established in 1652. In the 1700s, Sheikh Yusuf, who came from the Malay world, brought Islamic culture to the city and established the first mosques. Today, when you walk around Bo-Kaap, you feel exactly that historical texture.
Cape Town’s real revolution took place in the 1990s when the Apartheid regime ended. After that period, the city became a symbol of freedom and hope. Today, when you walk the streets of Cape Town, you can feel both the traces of the past and the dreams of the future. The juxtaposition of modern skyscrapers and colorful shantytowns is the best indicator of this story.
The city, which bore the painful scars of the apartheid regime in the past, continues to live in peace and unity today. With its art galleries, museums, theaters and colorful street art, Cape Town is one of the places where you can feel the spirit of South Africa most vividly. As you walk down the street, you hear African rhythms on one side and modern jazz sounds on the other. A different story at every step!
Let's not pass without giving some practical information:
Africa has 11 official languages, English is widely spoken in Cape Town, and Afrikaans and Xhosa are also frequently heard.
The currency is the South African Rand (ZAR).
Credit cards (Visa, Mastercard) are accepted almost everywhere.
Have your universal adapter with you.
As for security: Cape Town is one of the safest cities in South Africa. However, be sure to keep an eye on your bags to avoid petty theft and take the usual traveler precautions.
Cape Town is also a paradise for nature lovers. A journey along the Cape Peninsula will take you to iconic places like Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope. It is known as the meeting point of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. The sheer cliffs, the stormy winds and the wild nature... It has a beauty that is breathtaking.
Don’t forget to stop by Boulders Beach on the way! How many times in your life do you get to see African penguins with your naked eye? 🐧
And while we’re in Cape Town, let’s not forget the wine lovers. The Cape Winelands region awaits you just an hour away from the city. Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl… Getting lost among the vineyards, tasting the world’s finest wines while taking in the pastoral landscapes is almost a ritual here. In fact, I think taking a tour of Franschhoek on the wine tram should definitely be on your to-do list! 🍷
Cape Town has blended nature with modern life so beautifully that with every step you take, you feel like “should I explore a little more?” This city, located at the foot of Table Mountain, one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature, is a dream destination with its stunning beaches, unique flora, delicious food and world-famous wines!
Let me be honest: It is impossible not to fall in love with Cape Town. With its magnificent nature, vibrant culture and friendly atmosphere, this is one of those cities that gets to your heart.
In this guide, I share my must-do’s in Cape Town based on my own experiences. If you’re planning your first trip to Cape Town, I hope this post inspires you and makes your trip a little more magical. ✈️💙
If you are ready, let the Cape Town exploration begin! 🚀

🌟 Places to Visit and Activities to Do in Cape Town
I am 100% sure that the moment you step foot in Cape Town, you will say, "Why haven't I been here before?" 😍 This city is so beautifully blended with nature, history and flavor that you want to live every moment to the fullest. Let's take a look at the things you absolutely must do in Cape Town:

🏔️ 1. Table Mountain – The Crown of the City
Table Mountain, rising majestically in the middle of the city, is like the heart of Cape Town. You can either take the cable car (I think the view is amazing 🚠) or if you are a nature lover, you can climb it on foot. From the top, a magnificent panorama that extends to the city, the Atlantic Ocean and even Robben Island awaits you. Especially at sunset... That's when the feeling of "I'm glad I'm here!" penetrates your heart. 💛
Tip: Go early in the morning, the weather can get cloudy in the afternoon. The wind can be surprising! 🌀

The Table Mountain Cable Car is the quickest way to get to the top of Table Mountain.
Visiting Hours: Depending on the weather, the first cable car goes up at 08:00 or 08:30; the last cable car goes down between 18:00 and 21:30, depending on the season.

Location: Tafelberg Road, Cape Town
Entrance Fee: Paid
🛥️ 2. Shopping and Smell of the Sea at V&A Waterfront
This port was built between 1860 and 1920. This huge complex, located on the waterfront, brings together shopping, art, food and entertainment. V&A (Victoria & Alfred) Waterfront is Cape Town’s number one tourist attraction. With over 100 restaurants and plenty of entertainment options, this place is home to the Waterfront, V&A Food Market, Wheel Cape, Watershed Market, Long Street, and many other attractions, all of which are in this area and can be visited on foot. You can join boat tours and watch the marina in the evening with an ice-cold drink. Robben Island ferries also depart from the Waterfront, and Cape Town’s most popular helicopter tour companies are also located in this area. ✨
Shopping Hours: 09:00 - 21:00

🎨 3. Bo-Kaap or De Waterkant – Explore the Colorful Streets
The Bo-Kaap area is one of the most colourful and historic areas of Cape Town. The vibrant, pastel-hued houses we see today actually have a deep meaning and story.
It was a residential area for a community of Malays , Indonesians, Indians and Africans brought here as slaves by Dutch colonists in the 18th century. That's why it's sometimes called the "Malay Quarter".
Initially, the houses given to this community were uniform and white in color, because the landlords had stipulated so: since the houses were rented, they were not even allowed to be painted.
After slavery was abolished, these people became free and for the first time they became real owners of their homes!
🏡To celebrate this freedom, they each painted their houses in the colors they wanted. The colors became an expression of freedom , originality and community spirit .
That's why every corner of Bo-Kaap is not only stunning, but also carries a story of hope, resilience and freedom. 🌈✨
Bo-Kaap is an Instagram paradise with its houses painted in pastel tones. 📸
But this place is not just about photography; it is also a lively neighbourhood that keeps the Cape Malay culture alive.
🐧 4. Boulders Beach – See African Penguins
Boulders Beach is located in Simon's Town and is home to African penguins in their natural habitat. Watching these cute and endangered penguins is truly a delight. Although it is not possible to come into direct contact with the penguins, you can observe them comfortably and safely thanks to the wooden walkways along the beach.
African penguins love the crystal clear waters and granite cliffs of Boulder's Beach – making for an incredible photo opportunity. 🐧🏖️
Tip: In the morning, there are fewer crowds and the penguins are more energetic!

🌊 5. Cape Point and Cape of Good Hope
Where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet! 🌍
One of the best ways to see the magnificent nature of Cape Town is to take the Cape Peninsula Tour . This full-day tour takes you along the coastal road, offering stunning views such as Chapman's Peak Drive , and gives you the chance to explore the charming towns along the way. When you finish the tour, you'll reach the Cape of Good Hope , the tip of the southwest coast of Africa.
Take a photo break at the Cape of Good Hope sign , you will get the feeling that "I think I am in a documentary" as you walk towards Cape Point.
Cape Point is located in the Cape Floral Region and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is home to approximately 20% of Africa's vegetation. Many endemic plant species grow here. This tour is a great opportunity to discover both the fascinating beauty of nature and the historical and cultural richness of the region.
Watch out for baboons on the road! (Yes, they might raid your car if you leave your window open! 😂)

🏝️ 6. Robben Island – Journey to the Heart of History
This island, located just off the coast of Cape Town, was used as a prison for political prisoners for many years. It is also the island where Nelson Mandela spent most of his 27-year sentence. A must-see for history lovers. Tours depart from the V&A Waterfront. You can cross to the island by boat (departing from Nelson Mandela Gateway).
During your tour, former prisoners will show you around the prison and tell you their stories. During the visit, you can also see the limestone quarry where prisoners worked and Nelson Mandela's cell. This visit will make you deeply feel how powerful the struggle for freedom and equality is.
It was both thought-provoking and inspiring to hear about South Africa's first black president from people who actually knew him.
🏖️ 7. Camps Bay and Clifton Beaches – Sea, Sand, Sun
Clifton has four different beaches, you can visit all of them while deciding which one to go to.
Camps Bay is the place for those who want to pop champagne at sunset, with both its beach and cafes. (I'm not kidding, they actually pop champagne on the beach! 🥂)
Camps Bay is a popular beach on the east coast. It is accessed directly from the road. Parking can be difficult in the summer months. There are many cafes, restaurants and small markets along the road behind the beach. 🏝
White sands, turquoise waters and stylish beach cafes...Whether you swim in the cool ocean waters or sip ice-cold cocktails at beach bars. 🍹

Clifton and Camps Bay , on Cape Town’s coastline, are known for their white sand beaches, stylish restaurants and stunning sunsets. During the summer months, these areas are packed with people looking to enjoy the sea and sun.

🍷 8. Stellenbosch and Franschhoek
If you love wine, it would be a shame to leave Cape Town without visiting the vineyards around Cape Town. Vineyards, historic wineries and gourmet restaurants as far as the eye can see...
The Cape Winelands region, about an hour from Cape Town, is known for its world-famous wines and vineyards. The towns of Stellenbosch , Franschhoek and Paarl offer a unique getaway for those looking for wine tasting, gastronomy and peaceful nature views. The region also offers a unique atmosphere for its visitors with its architecture and history.
9.Lion's Head and Signal Hill
Lion's Head is the most climbed peak in South Africa. At 670 metres high, it sits to the right of Table Mountain and offers stunning 360-degree views of Cape Town .
The most popular hiking route is known as the Spiral Trail , which also includes a section of chain climbing for those who wish to use it — but this section can be bypassed if desired.
Location: Drive up Kloof Nek Road; at the end of the road turn right onto Signal Hill. The car park is near a wooden hut and a barrier gate.
Information: The area is under SANParks. For more information see www.friendsoflionshead.org.za
Entrance Fee: Free, but be sure to tip the car guards .
Drive Up Signal Hill If you’re not feeling up to an early morning walk, you can drive up Signal Hill, which has great views of the city center and the Atlantic coast. It’s more comfortable as it’s a flat hill.
Paraglide from Signal Hill
One of the most memorable moments of my trip to Cape Town was definitely paragliding from Signal Hill ! I was a little excited at first and I must admit I was a bit nervous… But overcoming my fear and throwing myself into the sky was an incredible feeling. The views of Table Mountain , the ocean and the city were breathtaking as we soared through the air. The feeling of freedom was indescribable! If you are an adventurer, I definitely recommend trying it — you won’t regret it.
Take a Helicopter Tour in Cape Town
Seeing Cape Town from above is an incredible experience! Our 20-minute helicopter tour took us over Table Mountain , Lion's Head and many other landmarks. Seeing the city from such a different perspective offers both the grandeur of nature and the beauty of architecture. Whether you are looking for a romantic getaway or just looking for some adrenaline, a helicopter tour is sure to be unforgettable.

One-day road trip route;
Muizenberg, St James, Kalk Bay, Simon's Town, Boulders Beach, Cape Point and Cape of Good Hope, Chapman's Peak, Hout Bay, Llandudno Beach
Colourful Beach Huts of Muizenberg
Muizenberg is one of the most popular surfing spots in Cape Town because it is suitable for both beginners and experienced surfers. You can take a short surf lesson or take a walk on the beach. Here you can see the colourful Victorian cottages that Cape Town is famous for!
Once in Muizenberg you can have lunch at Tiger's Milk, then move on to Kalk Bay or Simon's Town.

St. James Beach
On the way from Muizenberg to St. James, you will pass large and magnificent stone houses that reflect the history of the area. This area is commonly known as "Millionaires' Row" and bears traces of its rich colonial past.
The towns in this area are very small and consist of just a few streets. Kalk Bay is a 5 minute drive from Muizenberg, but both towns have a completely different atmosphere! Muizenberg has a distinctly "surf" culture, while Kalk Bay is brimming with antique shops, craft shops, and many art and book stores.
Taking a walk through the past in Kalk Bay is truly a delight. The antique shops are among the best in Cape Town, so if you’re looking for a truly unique souvenir, don’t miss out!
Most people opt for fish and chips for lunch in Kalk Bay (this really is one of the tastiest spots to eat this famous seaside dish), but if you fancy breakfast, I recommend Olympia Cafe!
Simon's Town is a friendly port town with a rich maritime history.
You can have lunch in Simon's Town or spend time browsing the shops. You can also skip the food part and go straight to Boulder's Beach.

Spend a day at Llandudno Beach . This hidden paradise is nestled between two cliffs and is a great escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. With crystal clear waters and soft sand, you can swim, sunbathe and surf. If you’re lucky, you might spot dolphins or whales in the distance. The beach is surrounded by huge cliffs and offers stunning views across the Atlantic Ocean. Don’t forget to bring sunscreen, snacks and drinks as there are no restaurants or shops here. This is the perfect place to spend a quiet day at the beach soaking up the sun.
For all kinds of activities to do in Cape Town, be sure to check this address before you go.
As I have suggested in other countries, you can join free walking tours to explore the city.
🍴 Cape Town Food and Drink Recommendations
Cape Town cuisine has a rich variety that blends African flavours with European influences.
🥘 1. Taste Cape Malay Cuisine

Transportation in Cape Town 🚗🚌✈️
Cape Town is a large, beautiful and easy city to get around! Whether you want to get lost in the crowded streets of the city or in the lap of nature, transportation here is very practical and enjoyable. Let me tell you how to get around Cape Town with ease! 🎒🌍
✈️ Airport Transportation:
Cape Town International Airport is approximately 20 km from the city centre. To get from the airport to the city:
You can call Uber or Bolt (the most popular modes of transportation in the city),
If you want, you can take the MyCiTi buses and go to the city center for a more affordable price. Moreover, there is free WiFi at the airport, so you can easily call an Uber from your phone. 📱
🚗 Uber and Bolt
Uber is definitely the star of transportation in Cape Town! Fast, safe and economical. Moreover, since popular touristic places (such as Table Mountain, Camps Bay, V&A Waterfront) are very close to each other, transportation with Uber is both easy on the pocket and saves time. 🤫✨
🚌 MyCiTi Bus – Public Transport
Another great option is MyCiTi buses ! They provide easy transportation, especially between the airport and the city center, and within the city. All you need to do is buy a small “myconnect” card. Once you have the card, you can load it as much as you want and use it on the buses. Imagine a clean, punctual and very safe public transportation network. And if you download the free app, you can follow the routes and times from your phone! 📲🚌
🚙 Car Rental – For Those With Adventure Spirit
As in most countries, it was our first choice here. There are many places to visit and if you want to explore to witness the natural landscapes, renting a car is a great idea! But a warning: Traffic in South Africa drives on the right! It feels a little strange at first, but after a few tours you get used to it. There is not much traffic in the city, the signs can be a little confusing at times, but the roads are generally in pretty good condition. 🛣️🚘
👟 Explore on Foot – Feel the Heart of the City
There are some parts of Cape Town that you can't help but explore on foot! Especially in areas like V&A Waterfront , Sea Point Promenade , Green Point Park , walking is both safe and extremely enjoyable. Walking by the sea and watching the sunset, listening to street musicians in the cool of the evening... This is where the magic of Cape Town lies! 🌅🎶
🚙 Car Rental in Cape Town
Renting a car is definitely one of the most enjoyable ways to get around Cape Town! If you’re planning an adventure outside the city, to Cape Point, the vineyards in Stellenbosch or the Garden Route, renting a car is one of the best options.
So, how do you rent a car and what should you pay attention to? Let's take a look together!
When we went, we rented a car from Hertz and it was super easy! If you are looking to rent a car from a reliable and well-known big company in Cape Town, these are some great options:
✅ Hertz – Fast and reliable, our experience was very good!
✅ Avis – Easy pick-up from the airport.
✅ Budget – Great for economical options!
✅ Europcar – Popular with a wide range of vehicles.
✅ Sixt – A good option for those who want to rent a premium car.
You can pick up the vehicles from Cape Town International Airport or from the offices in the city center. My suggestion: Renting from the airport saves time and is a great opportunity to start your journey directly! ✈️🚗
🛑 Things to Consider When Renting
✅ Driving license: You don't need an international driving license, a Turkish driving license is valid! (But it might be a good idea to take an English translation with you.)
✅ Insurance: Make sure to get comprehensive insurance! Especially consider the "fully comprehensive insurance" option.
✅ Fuel Policy: Generally, "Full to Full" (pick up full, return full) is the most logical option.
✅ Additional Drive: If you are going to use it alternately, don't forget to add an additional drive!
And the most important point: Traffic flows on the right in South Africa! 😱Although it may seem a little difficult to get used to at first, you adapt within 15-20 minutes. Be careful and patient, after a few laps you will get the hang of it!
🛣️ How to Drive in Cape Town?
🚦 The roads are generally in good condition, traffic is not very heavy.
🅿️ It is generally easy to find parking, but some areas in the city center may be charged.
🐒 Watch out for baboons in Cape Point and nature areas! Don't leave your window open or they'll barge in and steal your snacks. (I'm not kidding! 😆)
⛽ Fuel & Road Fees
Gas stations usually accept cash and credit cards , but not always. It's a good idea to have some cash on hand!
There may be toll roads on the main roads, so it is a good idea to carry some change with you.
📌 For Whom Does It Make More Sense to Rent a Car?
✅ If you plan to go outside the city center.
✅ If you want to see places like Cape Winelands, Cape Point, Garden Route.
✅ If you like to explore freely!
If your plan is only the city center and popular tourist spots, Uber or MyCiTi buses will be enough for you. But if you say “I will hit the road and explore!”, definitely rent a car! 🚗💨
Renting a car in Cape Town is a huge advantage as it is extremely convenient and offers freedom to explore. We rented from Hertz and were very comfortable, so I definitely recommend it!
When is the Best Time to Visit Cape Town?
If you are looking for generally warm and sunny weather, the best time to visit Cape Town is between November and March . These months coincide with the summer season. However, prices can increase and tourist crowds can increase during this period.
I traveled in February and honestly had no problems with crowds. On the contrary, most places were very quiet and very enjoyable to visit.
In summary:
November – March: Summer season, warm and sunny weather. Ideal for swimming and outdoor activities. However, prices can be high.
April – May / September – October: Transitional periods called “Shoulder season.” The weather is still nice, the crowds are fewer, and the prices are more affordable.
June – August: Winter season. The weather can be cool and sometimes rainy. However, it is a good alternative for those who want a less touristy and affordable travel. It is an ideal period for indoor activities such as museums, art galleries and wine tasting.
In conclusion, Cape Town is a city that can be visited at any time of the year. The most suitable time depends entirely on your travel preferences and interests .

🎯 A Little Reminder:
Off-season (April–September) prices are more affordable and the crowds are less!
