AMERICA TRAVEL GUIDE

New York City is one of the most iconic cities not only in America but in the world. Every street is like a scene from a movie, every neighborhood has a different spirit. All the streets are so familiar, like something out of a movie we watched as children. It's so huge, every corner is worth exploring; I can't mention everything, but in this guide, I'll explain the basics for first-time visitors, my own experiences, and the most special places you should discover, step by step.

🗽 General Information About New York

New York City (NYC), known worldwide as the "city that never sleeps," is a veritable open-air film set for travelers, with its cultural diversity, historic buildings, contemporary art, street life, and iconic skyline.

New York City, with a population of approximately 8.5 million, is one of the most populous cities in America; including the metropolitan area, this number approaches 20 million. The city is comprised of five main boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx, and Staten Island, each with its own character. Although the official language is English, it's quite common to hear more than 150 languages spoken on the streets. The currency is, as you know, the US dollar. The city, which first appeared on the historical stage in 1624 as a settlement founded by the Dutch under the name "New Amsterdam," is today one of the world's most cosmopolitan and dynamic centers.

New York is 7 hours behind Turkey. Regarding visas; Turkish citizens wishing to travel to the United States, including New York, for tourism, business, or education purposes must obtain a US visa .

✨ Landmarks of New York:

  • Empire State Building

  • Central Park

  • Statue of Liberty

  • Times Square

  • Broadway

  • Brooklyn Bridge

🗽 Statue of Liberty

A colossal Neoclassical statue gifted by France to the United States. Opened in 1886, the statue stands 95 meters tall. It was designed by the French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, and its metal framework was constructed by Gustave Eiffel, known for the Eiffel Tower.

🎟️ See the Statue of Liberty by Boat

  • Liberty Island: If you want to see it up close, you can take a boat to Liberty Island and climb the statue (ticket required).

  • Take the free Staten Island Ferry from Manhattan to Staten Island and enjoy views of the Statue of Liberty and Manhattan from the sea.

    • Ferry Tip: This tour is a great opportunity as it's free. You'll get to explore the city from a different perspective during your round trip.

Central Park; nature in the heart of the city. Walking, cycling, boat tours, squirrels…🧺

If you want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and take a breath, Central Park is perfect. Located right in the heart of New York, this huge green space is one of the best ways to relax in the city, and it's free.

The park features walking and jogging paths, bike trails, ponds where you can go boating, and even a zoo.

Free concerts and theatre performances are frequently held in the park during the summer months. The “Shakespeare in the Park” event is particularly popular, and tickets require early booking.

If you'd like to learn more about the sculptures, ponds, gardens, and famous film locations within the park, you can join a guided Central Park tour through Get Your Guide (25 USD). This tour offers a wonderful experience that allows you to truly get to know the park.

🚕 Times Square; Giant screens, street performers, and endless crowds.

Times Square will always be crowded, no matter when you go. You'll most likely be surrounded by tourists. There are pedestrian areas where you can sit and relax, plenty of shops, and many restaurants, most of which are quite expensive.

Frankly, unless you're shopping, eating something, or going to a Broadway show, there's not much to do here to keep you occupied for a long time. Apparently, no New Yorker hangs out in Times Square anyway. But even so, it's a great place for people-watching.

Especially climbing the steps of the TKTS ticket office and observing the surroundings, watching the chaos of the city from afar, is quite enjoyable. I particularly recommend coming at night. When the neon signs are lit, Times Square takes on a truly New York-worthy appearance ✨🌃

Broadway Show

New York is known as the theater capital of the world; so you can't leave without seeing a Broadway show! Be sure to add a show to your evening schedule.

Prices vary depending on the show, but you can find discounted same-day tickets at TKTS offices (Times Square, South Street Seaport, Downtown Brooklyn). You can also view ticket options through the TKTS app.

Arriving early for popular shows or booking tickets through the app will help you grab the best seats.

Seeing a Broadway show will truly make your NYC experience unforgettable.

Some of the most popular and favorite productions include:

🎭 The Lion King

🎭 The Phantom of the Opera

🎭 Wicked

🎭 Aladdin

🎭 Chicago

🎭 The Book of Mormon

🎭 Hamilton

🎟️ Average ticket price: At least 75–95 USD

💡 Tip: Finding discounted tickets for very popular shows (especially like Hamilton) can be difficult; it's more sensible to book tickets in advance for these performances.

🏙️ Empire State Building

One of the most iconic structures defining New York's skyline, the Empire State Building, at 1,453 feet (443 meters) tall, offers one of the best vantage points for a 360-degree view of Manhattan. Completed in 1931, the building's 1930s Art Deco interior design is a work of art in itself and deserves careful examination.

When you go up to the observation deck, you get a real sense of how dense, massive, and vibrant New York City is. The view is impressive, but the crowds are inevitable. Therefore, going early in the morning or around noon is the best strategy to avoid long queues and large tour groups.

📍 Address: 350 5th Avenue, Midtown

🌉 Brooklyn Bridge

The Brooklyn Bridge offers a pleasant 25-minute walk from Manhattan to Brooklyn, where a waterfront park awaits you at the other end. If you want to take photos, enjoy the scenery, and linger a bit along the way, the walk can extend to about 40 minutes, but believe me, it's well worth it.

The views of the Manhattan skyline offered while crossing the bridge are truly impressive. Skyscrapers, the East River, and the city's fabric flow past you step by step. I especially love doing this walk in the evening, when downtown is brightly lit and the crowds are less dense. I'd say it's one of the best times to experience New York's "city that never sleeps" feeling 🌉✨

🖼️ The Met (Metropolitan Museum of Art)

It's one of the world's largest museums, and if you're only going to see one museum in New York, I highly recommend choosing this one. Inside, you'll find an incredibly vast collection, ranging from artworks and historical objects to photographs and exhibitions covering different historical periods.

Don't come here with the mindset of "I'll just drop by for a few hours." I recommend setting aside at least half a day because a few hours is definitely not enough to do The Met justice 🎨

With over 490,000 exhibits in total, it's bound to get crowded, especially on weekends. But the museum is so large that it's possible to find quiet corners away from the crowds.

🌌 MoMA (Museum of Modern Art)

Picasso, Warhol, Dali and many more!

If you want to see modern art (and even be tempted to say "what am I looking at now?"), you're in the right place. One detail that makes MoMA special is Van Gogh's Starry Night painting ⭐️

In addition, the museum houses post-impressionist works and some of the most important examples of contemporary art. For lovers of modern and contemporary art, MoMA is considered one of the best in the world. If you are interested in this type of exhibition, you might not even realize how time flies here.

Address: 18 W. 54th Street, Midtown

🏛️ American Museum of Natural History

Dinosaur skeletons, space section…

This museum, made even more famous by the Night at the Museum films, is one of those places you really need to set aside plenty of time to explore. The exhibits on nature, human history, and marine life are both very comprehensive and highly educational.

Also, be sure to visit the space section at the Hayden Planetarium. Directed by renowned astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, this section features incredibly detailed and impressive exhibits about the formation of the universe. If you're interested in space and science, you'll definitely find it fascinating 🌌🦖

Bryant Park 🌿

The towering, crystal-clear building with the pointed roof in the background is the Bank of America Tower (One Bryant Park) . The skyscrapers you see around are right in the heart of Midtown Manhattan . The expansive green space in the foreground, with its chairs and park layout, is a classic Bryant Park scene. The New York Public Library is right next to the park. It's another park where you can breathe in the heart of the city.

Wall Street

Then, stroll along Wall Street and see for yourself the famous financial center that shapes, and at times destroys, the global economy.

Honestly, there aren't a huge number of places to visit here. However, Wall Street is one of New York's most iconic spots and definitely worth a short visit to experience its atmosphere.

If you're curious about what happens behind the scenes of Wall Street, which is more than just buildings, the Wall Street Insider guided tour organized by The Wall Street Experience is a good option. Accompanied by a guide who has worked on Wall Street, you'll hear about the history, rise, and fall of this (famous and equally controversial) financial center.

Grand Central Terminal

One of New York's most iconic and historic train stations. It was scheduled for demolition in 1975, but Jacqueline Kennedy (JFK's wife) saved it by raising funds to preserve it. We owe its continued existence today to her.

The first reflex upon entering the main hall is to look up. Watching the famous star-studded sky on the ceiling while people rush off somewhere might make you feel like Serena van der Woodsen.

If you'd like to learn more about the station's history and hidden gems, the Official Grand Central Terminal Tour offered by Take Walks is a very enjoyable option.

Located on the lower floor, the Grand Central Oyster Bar & Restaurant is a must-visit for seafood lovers.

If you're looking for a more elegant and nostalgic experience, you can visit The Campbell , which evokes the atmosphere of the 1920s. It was once the office of John W. Campbell, a board member of the New York Central Railroad and a financial magnate. Note that there's a stylish dress code 🍸

Guggenheim Museum

It houses a world-renowned collection spanning from Impressionism to Post-Impressionism, from the early modern period to contemporary art. But what makes this place special is not just the works inside.

The cylindrical building was designed by the legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright and is considered one of the most important architectural structures of the 20th century. Even from the outside, it's a work of art in itself. Inside, walking up the spiral ramp to explore the exhibits creates a much different and more memorable experience than a classic museum. I can say it's one of my favorite buildings and museums in the city.

📍 Address: 1071 5th Avenue, Upper East Side

Rockefeller Center

The Top of the Rock at Rockefeller Center is fantastic for getting a bird's-eye view of the city. In the winter months, ice skating in New York is one of the city's most iconic experiences. If you come around Christmas time, you can ice skate right next to the giant tree at Rockefeller. This skating rink is one of the most famous in the world.

Museum of the City of New York

Architecture, parks, streets, people, culture, and city life… Everything you can think of is told here, along with the story of New York.

The museum has many halls focusing on different periods of NYC's history. Interviews, maps, interactive exhibits, profiles of historical figures, and various objects unfold the city layer by layer. In short, I would call it the city's history museum.

Radio City Music Hall

Radio City Music Hall is a theater that is an icon of American entertainment culture. It has captivated visitors since the 1930s and was the largest hall in the world when it opened. It has hosted many major events, including the Tony and Grammy Awards. Today, it continues to host concerts and shows. You can see performances by The Rockettes dance group here.

Yankees / Mets / Rangers / Knicks Match

Do you enjoy sports?

You probably already know that New York is home to world-class teams. The Yankees and Mets (baseball), the Knicks (basketball), and the Rangers (ice hockey) form the heart of the city's sports culture.

If your schedule allows and you want to experience "American sports," definitely check for tickets. Prices vary depending on the game and team, but it's often possible to find tickets for around 20–35 USD.

Join Hiking Tours

New York is one of the best cities to explore on foot, and there are plenty of options. Dozens of walking tour companies operate throughout the city, and best of all, most of them are free. Walking tours are a fantastic way to get to know the city through the eyes of a New Yorker, to hear about the culture and stories of the "city that never sleeps."

Whether it's street art, history, food and drink, or tours focusing on specific neighborhoods... you're sure to find a tour that interests you. Here are three tour companies that stand out and shouldn't be missed:

New York is truly a foodie paradise. With cuisines from all over the world, street food, and legendary restaurants, dining here is an experience in itself. One of the most enjoyable ways to explore the city is to join a food tour that takes you to the right places. 📅 When is the best time to visit New York?

There's no single "best time" to visit New York — because the city shows a different face in every season. But if you know what you're looking for, you can easily choose the most suitable time.

🌸 Spring (March – May)

Central Park awakens in spring; budding trees, New Yorkers strolling, people relaxing on the grass with their coffee… This time, when the weather is neither too hot nor too cold, is ideal for those who want to explore on foot. With outdoor markets, walks in Central Park, and outdoor dining, the city comes alive again. April and May are particularly lively months in terms of events.

☀️ Summer (June – August)

Rooftop bars, open-air cinemas, concerts in Central Park, sea air in Coney Island… But I must admit the weather can be stifling at times . Especially in July, it's both hot and humid.

🍂 Autumn (September – November): The Golden Season

If you're dreaming of a New York "like something out of a movie," I'd suggest October . The parks are adorned with yellow and orange leaves, and the weather is perfect for sightseeing. The summer crowds are less intense, and everything takes on a much more romantic atmosphere.

❄️ Winter (December – February):

If you go in December, the Christmas decorations will enchant you. The giant Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center, the ice skating rinks, the shop windows… New York in winter is like a Christmas postcard. But it's seriously cold. It can be freezing, especially in January and February, with the added surprise of snow. Temperatures generally range between -7 and -5°C. However, hotel prices drop significantly, ice skating rinks are set up, and the cozy cafes and bookstores all over the city become even more appealing. But New Yorkers don't go out much during this time. If you don't like the cold, I recommend skipping this period.

✈️ How to get to New York? New York Transportation Guide

New York is a huge city, but don't worry, its transportation system is quite organized. Getting to and from the city is much easier than you might think.

🌍 How to get from Türkiye to New York?

There are direct flights from Istanbul to New York. The journey usually takes 10-11 hours, landing at either JFK (John F. Kennedy International Airport) or Newark Airport. Several airlines offer alternatives, including Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa, Qatar Airways, and Emirates. The most frequently used airport is JFK.

🛬 Transportation from the Airport to the City

✈️ Transportation from JFK to Manhattan:

  • AirTrain + Metro (most economical) : Approximately 1 hour – around $11

  • Taxi (comfortable but expensive) : Fixed fare system – approximately $70

  • Uber/Lyft : Varies depending on traffic, may be slightly cheaper than a taxi.

✈️ Transportation from Newark:

  • Take the NJ Transit train to Penn Station : Affordable and comfortable – 40–50 minutes.

  • Uber/Lyft or private shuttles are also options.

City Transportation Guide

New York is a huge city, but its transportation network is very robust. There's the subway, buses, walking, and ferries. It is possible to reach wherever you want with this.

New York City and surrounding boroughs (and even parts of New Jersey) are connected by a subway network. You can reach almost anywhere you want to go, either directly or very close by, using the subway.

From 2026 onwards, MetroCard will be completely phased out. Instead, MTA will switch to a contactless payment system called OMNY . With this system, you only need to scan your card to board the metro or bus. This card can be your credit or debit card, a digital wallet on your phone (Apple Pay, etc.), or a prepaid OMNY card that you can load with funds.

If metro access is not possible, buses come into play.

In the early days, apps like Google Maps or Citymapper are lifesavers!

🚇Metro

Open 24/7! You can use MetroCard or the new OMNY (contactless credit card payment) system. Single ride: $2.90. The routes might seem a little confusing at first, but you get used to it in a few days.

🚌 Buses

It's not as popular as the metro, but it's very useful for getting around certain areas. You can ride it using a MetroCard.

Routes and stops are generally busy. The bus fare is the same as the metro: $2.90. However, express buses cost $7, and unlimited MetroCard cannot be used on these lines.

🚕 Taxi, Uber and Lyft

Taxis are one of the most expensive transportation options in New York. Yellow taxis are a classic, but Uber/Lyft are generally cheaper. The starting fare is $3, followed by approximately $3.50 per mile. I recommend avoiding them if possible. However, during peak hours, they can sometimes be cheaper than Uber due to their fixed fares. Manhattan gets particularly congested during morning and evening rush hours.

Uber and Lyft are more economical and comfortable compared to taxis. They are the most logical alternatives if you don't want to use public transportation. Additionally, with Uber's Pool/Shared ride option, you can share a vehicle with others and travel even more cheaply.

⛴️ Ferry

The Staten Island Ferry is a must-have, especially for New Yorkers commuting in the morning. It operates 24 hours a day, is completely free, and offers the perfect view of the Statue of Liberty from the sea! Additionally, the NYC Ferry Service is a very practical transportation alternative. It connects Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx along the East River. It has many stops, and fares are the same as the subway.

Car rental

Renting a car in New York isn't very practical. Average daily prices are around $45, and parking, traffic, and fees within the city make things difficult. Unless you plan to travel outside the city, I recommend skipping the car rental. Public transportation is both faster and cheaper. For affordable car rental options, Discover Cars is a good alternative.

🛏️ Where to stay in New York?

New York is a huge city, and where you stay directly impacts the atmosphere of your trip. 💡Here are some of the most popular areas in the city and some tips on who should stay where.

🏙️ Manhattan – “A Classic New York Experience”

Advantages: Walking distance to tourist attractions, metro access to everywhere.

Who is it for: First-time visitors and those who want to be close to everything.

Popular regions:

  • Midtown: Around Times Square, the Empire State Building, and Broadway. Lively but a bit chaotic.

  • Upper West/East Side: Quieter, more upscale neighborhoods close to Central Park.

  • Lower Manhattan: Soho, Greenwich Village, Tribeca – artistic and stylish.

Midtown, It is home to many of New York's biggest tourist attractions. Rockefeller Center, Times Square, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Madison Square Garden, Broadway, and Koreatown are all located in this area.

The area is quite touristy and very crowded, but it can still be an attractive option for first-time New Yorkers and those who want to be within walking distance of everything.

If you want to be close to the main subway lines, Broadway, and tourist attractions, and also have a choice of major hotel chains, this is the place to stay. However, don't expect it to offer you a "real" New York local vibe.

The Upper West Side is one of the quieter areas to stay in the city. It's close to major museums like the American Museum of Natural History, as well as Central Park, but it's a bit more off the beaten path compared to the city's busiest spots. As with anywhere in New York, you can find good restaurants and bars here. If you're traveling with children or looking for a more peaceful stay, the Upper West Side is a very good choice.

The Upper East Side is perfect for museums; the famous Museum Mile, home to the Guggenheim, the Frick Collection, the Museum of the City of New York, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, is located in this area.

Over the last few years, the Upper East Side has become a bit more popular and "cool". Numerous good restaurants, new bars, fusion cuisine establishments, and hotels have opened in the area. It's a great place to stay if you want to mingle with the locals.

Lower Manhattan

SoHo is one of New York's most stylish and popular neighborhoods. Filled with art galleries, designer boutiques, and upscale restaurants, it's a fantastic area for shoppers and art lovers.

Greenwich Village is a bohemian, tranquil yet vibrant neighborhood in New York City. It's famous for its music bars, cafes, and theaters.

TriBeCa (Triangle Below Canal) is a neighborhood where former warehouses have been transformed into loft apartments, art galleries, and performance spaces. In the evenings, the streets are packed with people wanting to have drinks or dinner at the new and popular venues.

This is one of the city's most stylish and luxurious areas. You can spot celebrities and the city's wealthy here. It's not very close to the main tourist attractions, but it has a very vibrant food and drink scene and generally a calm atmosphere.

Financial District

Although New York City's Financial District primarily caters to office workers during the day, it has become a very popular and trendy neighborhood in recent years. It is now one of the preferred areas to live in the city.

Here you can discover the old face of New York: historic churches, buildings, and pubs dating back to the 1700s are located in this area. Federal Hall, the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, Wall Street, and Battery Park are also situated here.

🎨 Brooklyn – For Young and Creative Souls

The advantage: More affordable, full of art and street culture.

For whom: Alternative cafe lovers, photographers, and creative souls.

Popular regions:

  • Williamsburg: Hipster paradise – mural-covered streets, rooftop bars.

  • DUMBO: The Brooklyn Bridge view is perfect for iconic Instagram photos.

Williamsburg, located in Brooklyn, is famous for its great restaurants, cool and unique bars, boutique clothing stores, coffee shops, and beautiful parks. If you want to be in a vibrant, central, and energetic area without staying in Manhattan, Williamsburg is perfect for you.

🌍 Queens

Advantages: Affordable accommodation, authentic local life experience.

For whom: Budget-conscious travelers and those with a passion for culinary culture.

Popular regions:

  • Astoria: Greek restaurants, local life.

  • Long Island City: Hotels with Manhattan views – perfect for Instagram lovers!

Astoria Especially in terms of food, drink, and art, it's one of the most culturally diverse neighborhoods in New York. You can find some of the best Greek food in the city here.

Although it's a little off the beaten path of Manhattan, it's not actually that far away. It's about a 20-minute subway ride to Times Square. It stands out for its more affordable accommodation and the rich cultural offerings it provides.
