CITY OF ANGELS

Los Angeles... With its Hollywood glamour, ocean breeze, palm trees, and colorful streets, it's like an open-air movie set. From the moment you step inside, you feel like you're actually on set. In this article, I'll provide practical information about LA and share my own experiences. If you're ready, let's explore the city of angels together!

Venice Beach

Los Angeles is America's second-largest city, but it feels so much more than that. It's a vast metropolis, amidst movie stars, musicians, surfers, and, of course, endless traffic. But getting used to LA isn't something that can happen in just a few days; it takes some time to get into the rhythm of the city.

LA isn't a typical "tourist attraction" city like New York or Paris. Everything is so far apart, and if you haven't rented a car, things get really difficult. But that's where the beauty of it all comes in: Los Angeles is more about living than traveling. Grabbing a healthy breakfast and heading to the beach, going for an afternoon run, sitting by the ocean at sunset, attending a spontaneous concert... Doing what the locals do is how you capture the true spirit of LA.

And it's at that moment—at that point when you let go of the tourist-like pressure to "I have to go there too"—that the magic of LA begins to reveal itself. The city's ease, lightness, and go-with-the-flow vibe envelop you. That's when you fall in love with LA.

Santa Monica Beach

📍 2. Places to Visit in Los Angeles

When it comes to places to visit in Los Angeles, you're probably already familiar with many of them from Hollywood movies. It's perfectly normal to feel like you're walking through a different movie scene every day while exploring LA—because you really are! As I explored the city, I mentally divided my itinerary into five areas: Hollywood, Hollywoodland, West Hollywood, Downtown LA, and Santa Monica. This classification stems entirely from my own experience, but it's been quite practical. You can easily tailor your itinerary to your own.

Hollywood is LA's classic starting point. Walk among the stars on the Walk of Fame, see the TCL Chinese Theatre and the Dolby Theatre, and visit the Museum of Illusions and Madame Tussauds. It's that touristy yet fun area that gives you that "I've arrived in LA!" feeling.

Hollywoodland is the city's iconic blend of nature and film. You can't leave without posing for a photo op in front of the Hollywood Sign. Get lost in the vast landscapes of Griffith Park, admire the famous city skyline from Mulholland Drive, and watch the sunset from the terrace of the Getty Museum. Universal Studios and Warner Bros. tours are also a paradise for film buffs.

West Hollywood is more vibrant and colorful. Melrose Avenue's Instagrammable Paul Smith Pink Wall, The Grove, Farmers Market, and the famous Pink's Hot Dog are all here. It's the ideal spot for shopping during the day and entertaining at night.

You might also consider the Sunset Strip , Beverly Hills, and Rodeo Drive in this area. The magical atmosphere of Urban Lights, legendary clubs (Viper Room, Whisky a Go Go), and luxury stores... These are the places that make you say, "This is what LA life is like."

Downtown LA is the city's cultural heart. The old Mexican spirit of Olvera Street, the historic architecture of Union Station, the exotic atmosphere of Little Tokyo... With Walt Disney Concert Hall, Angels Flight, Grand Central Market, and Grand Park, this place is a world apart. If the time is right, you can even catch an event at the Belasco Theatre.

Santa Monica and its surrounding areas epitomize the spirit of LA. The breeze of Santa Monica Pier, the free spirit of Venice Beach, the boutique cafes of Abbot Kinney Boulevard, the vibrant street life of Third Street Promenade... Muscle Beach and Venice Canals are must-sees.

In short, dividing LA into these five areas is a very practical way to explore. Of course, there's no such "official classification"; this was my own route, based entirely on proximity. You can easily tailor your travel plans to your own preferences.

Here are some of the places I had the opportunity to see in LA and loved:

🎬 Hollywood Boulevard and Walk of Fame

It might sound like a cliché, but it's definitely an LA must! Walking among the stars on the Walk of Fame, checking out the handprints in front of the TCL Chinese Theatre, and passing by the Dolby Theatre truly gives you the feeling of being in the heart of the film industry. Yes, it's a bit touristy and crowded... but that's the real spice of the Los Angeles experience, in my opinion. It's hard to say I've explored LA without stopping here.

Hollywood

Hollywood Sign View

Hollywood Boulevard has undergone significant renovations in recent years and now has a much more vibrant atmosphere. You'll encounter plenty of street performers as you walk along the sidewalk. Seeing the stars of over 2,700 celebrities on the Walk of Fame and observing the hand and footprints in front of the TCL Chinese Theatre (formerly Grauman's) is truly a delightful experience. Furthermore, the TCL Chinese Theatre is home to one of the country's largest movie screens. If you're wondering, "Where do the rich and famous live?", you can also take a short tour of Hollywood on a tourist bus.

The best way to reach the Hollywood Sign is via the walking trails in Griffith Park. The park is open from sunrise to sunset, and the city views are especially stunning at sunset. If you enjoy walking, you can choose from three different trails—from easy to more challenging:

  • Mt. Hollywood Trail

  • Brush Canyon Trail

  • Cahuenga Peak Trail

These hikes definitely require a few hours. If you'd like to join a group, Get Your Guide offers 2.5-hour tours for around $25. It's a great way to experience both nature and the city in LA.

Hollywood Sign

🌄 Griffith Observatory

Griffith Observatory is the perfect place not only to watch the sky but also to soak up the views of Los Angeles. The view from here, especially at sunset, is picture-perfect! You'll get a bird's-eye view of the city and a clear view of the Hollywood sign. What's more, admission inside the observatory is completely free , making it one of the best budget-friendly stops in LA.

It's perfect for a stroll, a picnic, or a quiet day out with friends. Griffith Park's walking paths stretch all the way to Mulholland Drive, offering breathtaking city views at every step.

This is definitely one of the best places to get away from the chaos of the city in Los Angeles and take a breather. 🌴

Grifith Observatory

Griffith Observatory

Getty Museum

The Getty Museum is truly captivating, boasting an art collection, impressive architecture by Richard Meier, constantly renovated gardens, and breathtaking views overlooking Los Angeles. Opened in 1997, the museum focuses on pre-20th-century European art and 19th- and 20th-century American and European photography. Seeing works by masters like Van Gogh and Gauguin up close is a unique experience.

One of the most memorable moments of my time in LA was definitely visiting the Getty. If you can only visit one museum in the city, I'd wholeheartedly recommend choosing this one. Admission is completely free , but parking is $25. A quick note: the museum is closed on Mondays, so keep that in mind when planning.

Few places offer such harmony between art, architecture, and landscape—the Getty combines them all into one experience.

Universal Studios Hollywood

Universal Studios Hollywood , the world's only active film studio and theme park, is a must-see. The approximately hour-long studio tour takes you behind the scenes of Hollywood, showcasing iconic sets like the plane crash scene from War of the Worlds , Peter Jackson's King Kong set, the Bates Motel from Psycho , and the Fast & Furious rides. The tour is narrated by an entertaining video presentation by Jimmy Fallon.

At the theme park, you'll find experiences like the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Jurassic World, the Simpsons roller coaster, special effects shows, and the soon-to-open Nintendo World. Single-day tickets start at $109, while two-day passes start at $159. It's a good idea to purchase tickets in advance; they sell out quickly, especially during peak season.

You can also see famous film sets at Warner Bros., Universal, Sony, and Paramount studios in Los Angeles. Scenes from The Wizard of Oz , the iconic bank from Forrest Gump , and many other unforgettable landmarks await you here. Tours typically last one to two hours and can be done on foot or by tram. Prices start at $70 per person, and tickets sell out quickly; be sure to book in advance.

🎡 Santa Monica Pier

The place I found the most peace in Los Angeles was definitely the Santa Monica Pier . The sound of the waves crashing against the shore, the energy of the amusement park, the liveliness of the people walking on the pier... Every moment was so full. Sitting on the pier at sunset, watching the colors of the sky, in particular, was a wonderful way to escape the hustle and bustle of LA and just enjoy the moment. 🌴

🏄 Venice Beach and Street Culture

I highly recommend walking along the coast from Santa Monica to Venice Beach . This is LA's most colorful, bohemian side: street artists, skate parks, graffiti-covered walls. Founded as a beach town in 1905, Venice Beach has become both a hip and cultural hub. Its man-made canals, adorned with gondolas, reflect the city's chic yet relaxed vibe. The canals and boardwalks are perfect for a leisurely stroll in the morning or evening. Crossing the bridges and admiring the charming houses and picturesque gardens is a special treat.

The Venice Boardwalk stretches along the coast and continues all the way to Santa Monica. Here, you can stroll for an afternoon, watching street performers perform, shopping in boutique stores, or relaxing in cafes. Filled with amusement parks, a small steam train line, art galleries, gyms, and cocktail bars, this area is considered one of the best boardwalks in the world.

🌴 Abbot Kinney Boulevard

This street near Venice Beach is a true discovery paradise: overflowing with boutique shops, art galleries, restaurants, and bars. Especially during First Friday, held on the first Friday of each month, the street transforms into a festive area with street music, delicious food trucks, and a lively crowd. It's one of the city's coolest spots, bustling with activity at all hours—a must-see for the Venice energy.

💎Beverly Hills & Rodeo Drive

You're right in the heart of luxury and glamour! Walking down Rodeo Drive isn't your average stroll; as you window shop, you'll find yourself wondering, "I wonder if a celebrity will walk out of here?"

Of course, I struck my classic pose in front of the Beverly Hills sign—tourist mission accomplished! 😎 The palm tree-lined streets are so stylish and organized that you feel like you're in a scene from a Hollywood series with every step you take.

🛏️ Accommodation Suggestions in Los Angeles

In a vast city like Los Angeles, where you stay largely sets the tone for your trip. I experienced two different Airbnb stays during my trip to LA: one in Culver City and the other in Beverly Hills . Both offered a completely different atmosphere.

🏡 Culver City: Chilled and Local

Our first stop was Culver City. This is a less touristy, more local side of LA. The apartment we stayed in was both clean and quite comfortable. The neighborhood had streets for morning walks, small cafes, and local shops. It was also particularly convenient for access to different parts of the city: we could reach both the beach and the city center in about 15-20 minutes by car. It was also a more economical option. (Link: AIRBNB )

💎 Beverly Hills: Luxury and Prestigious

Our second home was in Beverly Hills. Those chic, palm-lined streets that come to mind the moment you hear the name actually exist! Staying in this area feels like being in a movie. The house was more luxurious, and the surroundings were more organized and luxurious. We were very close to Rodeo Drive and famous restaurants. Staying here was a bit more expensive, of course, but it's definitely worth it if you're looking for a taste of luxury in the city.

📌 Other Accommodation Recommendations:

  • Santa Monica: Oceanfront hotels, vibrant beach life.

  • West Hollywood: The heart of nightlife and shopping.

  • Downtown LA: Central but requires a little more attention, especially at night.

If you're looking for a balance of tranquility and city vibes, combining several locations like we did makes a lot of sense. Airbnb is very common in LA, and finding clean and comfortable options is generally easy.

When to Go to Los Angeles?

The best time to visit Los Angeles begins with considering both the crowds and the weather. Summer (June–August) is the city's peak tourism season. Temperatures often reach 30°C, and beaches, Disneyland, and other family-friendly spots can get quite crowded as everyone wants to spend time outdoors. Accommodation prices also rise, so booking early is essential. On the plus side, it almost never rains, so you can enjoy plenty of sunshine. 🌞

My favorites are the transitional periods, like March–May and September–November . The weather is warm but not oppressive, and the crowds are much fewer. Temperatures generally range between 21–27°C, and there's almost no rain. This is a great time to get away from the city center and explore hiking trails or spend a quiet day at the beach.

December is the coldest month of the year, but accommodation prices drop significantly, making it ideal for those looking for a more budget-friendly trip. Average daily temperatures are around 21°C, and occasional rain is possible, so it's a good idea to bring a raincoat or umbrella.

Los Angeles Travel Guide: Step-by-Step Booking Plan

Don't be intimidated by planning a trip to a city as big as Los Angeles! Here are a few steps that will make it easier for you and ensure you create a fun itinerary without wasting any time:

1️⃣ Research Your Flight Ticket – Skyscanner : First, book your flight. It scans not only major airlines but also smaller and budget-friendly options. If you search for flexible dates, you can easily compare the best prices and different routes.

2️⃣ Choose Your Accommodation – Booking.com Aeroplane After purchasing your ticket, start booking your accommodation. Booking.com offers the widest selection of hotels and often offers the best prices. It's helpful to review hotel reviews and book in areas close to the city center or convenient to your attractions. Early booking is essential in popular areas!

3️⃣ Plan Tours and Activities – GetYourGuide You can use GetYourGuide to find activities to do in Los Angeles. You can find everything from walking tours and cooking classes to street art workshops and museum tours. Buying tickets in advance saves time and offers some discounts during busy periods.

4️⃣ Don't Forget to Rent a Car: Public transportation in LA isn't always sufficient. Renting a car allows you to explore the city freely. Traffic is light compared to big cities, and finding parking is usually not a problem. This allows you to plan your entire itinerary flexibly and enjoyably. 🚗

Los Angeles Transportation Guide

Getting around in a massive city like Los Angeles is nearly impossible without renting a car, as the must-see attractions are spread out over such a vast area. Fortunately, renting a car in LA is both easy and practical. Traffic is relatively light, especially compared to major cities like New York, and the roads are comfortable and convenient outside of rush hour. Renting a car within the city is generally more advantageous, as public transportation can be inadequate in some areas.

🚗 Traffic and Transportation Ease

Despite being a large city, traffic in LA isn't as heavy as you might expect. There's no stop-and-go traffic or congested roads like in New York. Except for major arteries and busy areas, you can drive quite easily. While traffic can get heavy on some main roads during lunchtime and evenings, the driving experience is still quite comfortable and enjoyable.

🅿️American Park System

Finding parking in LA is generally not a problem. There are parallel parking lots or parking garages almost everywhere in the city, and they are generally large and well-organized. There are ample parking lots in front of shopping malls, restaurants, and tourist attractions. While there are paid parking lots, you won't have to search for a spot for long. In fact, daily parking rates are quite reasonable in some areas. Using the parking machines and ticket system is also very easy; you can easily see how long you'll be charged and park without any hassle. Driving and parking in LA is much more convenient and stress-free than you might expect in a big city.

For coffee lovers, Verve Coffee is a great option. Both the coffee and the atmosphere are a great way to kick off a morning in LA.

For those looking for a quick and delicious alternative, Five Guys and In-N-Out Burger offer the classic American burger experience. In-N-Out's fresh and crispy fries are especially unforgettable!

For a sweeter or more relaxed lunch , Ben & Jerry's ice cream is always a savior. Especially on a sunny LA day, eating ice cream combined with the city's energy is a real treat.
