How much time should I spend in Laos?

Is it possible to travel around Laos in one week?

Yes. Since Laos is a small and easily accessible country, it's possible to visit its most important cities in a week. Vientiane, Wang Vieng, and Luang Prabang are ideal destinations for this timeframe.

For those traveling to Laos for the first time, there are two options:

  • A short visit as part of a Southeast Asia tour,

  • Or a longer route covering the entire country.

For those with limited time for a short visit, entering and exiting through the capital Vientiane would be ideal, allowing them to explore the mountains of Wang Vieng and the historical atmosphere of Luang Prabang over a few days.

Located just an hour's train ride or a three-hour bus ride from the capital, Vang Vieng is renowned for its limestone mountains and turquoise lagoons. It's the perfect place for those seeking to escape the tropical heat and immerse themselves in nature.

A little further north, a few hours' journey, Luang Prabang captivates visitors with its ancient temples, forest air, and tranquil lifestyle. If you want to return to the pace of city life, you can take the high-speed train back to Vientiane in less than two hours.

A Longer Visit (At Least a Week)

If you have a little more time, we definitely recommend traveling around the country in a circular route. You can enter Laos from Thailand, Vietnam, or China, and then use the intercity buses that connect the country's major cities.

From a planning perspective, you can divide the country into four regions:

  • Northern Laos: Includes historical sites such as Luang Prabang, Luang Namtha, and the mysterious Plain of Jars .

  • Vientiane Region: This area includes the capital city Vientiane and the charming nearby town of Vang Vieng.

  • Central Laos: Includes the Tha Khaek Loop route, famous for its captivating natural landscapes, and ancient towns like Savannakhet , dating back to the French colonial era.

  • Southern Laos: With the magnificent Bolaven Plateau and the Si Phan Don region, it is where the Mekong River Delta begins.

Laos 1-Week Trip Plan

If you only have a week and it's your first time in Laos, it's best to focus your trip on the Vientiane – Vang Vieng – Luang Prabang route. For those who want to skip the temples, you can use Luang Prabang as a base and head north to hiking and trekking destinations.

Day 1

Vientiane

Arrival in Vientiane. Today is a day to explore the capital.

  • Pha That Luang

  • Patuxai

  • Morning Market

  • Wat Sisaket

  • COPE Visitor Centre

In the evening, you can watch the sunset on the banks of the Mekong River. And you can visit the Night Market.

👉 One full day is usually enough for Vientiane.

Vientiane (Detailed Plan)

Around 8:30 AM, you can join a city tour by tuk-tuk. These are "Lao for One Day" style tours. They are a little different from classic tourist trips and allow you to get to know the city more closely.

The tour begins with a visit to a local market. Be sure to try kao larm , sweet rice cooked in bamboo. Afterwards, you'll visit a silversmith's workshop, a very interesting experience. The best part is lunch. You'll eat in the kitchen of a restaurant that trains street youth. It's both a wonderful experience and a way to support them. The tour continues with a visit to the COPE Visitor Center. It's a truly impressive place to understand Laos's war history. The tour usually ends with learning how to make a wax flower offering at a temple. A small but unique experience.

After the tour, it's time to explore the city a bit more on your own. You can take a tuk-tuk to Pha That Luang, one of Laos' most important landmarks. You'll also see Patuxai along the way. If you have time, you can also visit Wat Sisaket. For dinner, I recommend 525. The laap (a Laotian dish made with minced meat, mint, lime, and spices) is especially worth trying here.

As the sun sets, head towards the banks of the Mekong River. The color of the river at sunset is truly beautiful. Afterwards, you can stroll towards the night market. Street food, grilled meats and fish…

Day 2

Vientiane → Vang Vieng

You don't need to get up too early in the morning, but be careful not to miss the train 😄 The train journey from Vientiane to Vang Vieng is generally one of the most pleasant and comfortable. The scenery is quite beautiful, you travel through the mountains. It takes about an hour, but it goes by quickly.

The first thing you should do when you arrive in Vang Vieng: 👉 rent a motorbike

Because this isn't a place you can explore on foot.

First stop: Blue Lagoon (Vang Vieng). It's quite popular for its turquoise water. It gets crowded, but it's still worth seeing. Afterwards: Tham Chang Cave. You can sit and relax with mountain views as the sun sets.

Evening: Dinner by the river + light chill

Day 3

Vang Vieng

I'd say today is the most fun day in Laos. If your budget allows: 🎈 Hot air balloon ride

The view at sunrise in the morning is incredible. Afterwards:

  • Kayaking / tubing

  • River activities

  • Cave exploration

The Water Cave experience, in particular, is quite different.

Late afternoon:

  • Nam Xay Viewpoint

It's a bit tiring, but the view at the top is amazing 🔥

Day 7

Luang Prabang → Vientiane

I recommend starting your last day in Luang Prabang a little early. That way you can make the most of your time in Vientiane. You can get up early in the morning and watch the alms-giving ceremony to the monks. Yes, it's a bit touristy, but it's still a nice experience to see Laotian culture. Then, transfer to Vientiane.

Start your day in Vientiane with a delicious breakfast. Today we'll explore the remaining places in Vientiane that we didn't get to see. Before the midday heat sets in, we'll hire a tuktuk and head to Buddha Park, about half an hour away. After spending 2-3 hours in the park, we'll return to the city center and visit Haw Phra Kaew, the Morning Market, and buy souvenirs. Afterwards, a must-do in Laos: 👉 a massage.

Instead of going to touristy places, I recommend choosing places frequented by locals. One of the places I went to was Oasis Massage Vientiane . It looks small from the outside, but the inside is quite spacious and clean. This is the country where you can get the cheapest massage in Southeast Asia. Your mood will definitely improve after the massage 😄 A nice meal in the evening is a must.

Suggestions:

  • 525

  • QIU 19

  • Ban Anou Night Market

  • Khop Chai Deu (its roof is quite popular)

⭐ These are important!

Book your train ticket in advance (they fill up very quickly)

You can't explore Vang Vieng without renting a motorbike .

Go to Kuang Si early → it gets crowded.

✔ Be careful if you're making plans during the monsoon season.

✔ Bring cash (cards aren't accepted everywhere)
